Fried Wontons

My family LOVES fried wontons! Some of the ones shown here were made by me, some by my granddaughter Dellaney in Arizona. Great snacks/appetizers, but I'll admit to making them as a main dish. Why not!!? We all tweek the recipe slightly, to our own taste, so feel free to do the same. No one in my household likes cilantro, so we omit it. Others don't add the 5-spice or sesame oil. When I've got it on hand, I love adding chopped bok choy. They're all yummy! Make it your own.

Ingredients

30 minutes
50-60 wontons
  1. Peanut oil for frying
  2. 1 pkg.Wonton wrappers
  3. 1 lb.Ground pork
  4. 1egg
  5. 3green onions, minced
  6. Cilantro, to taste
  7. 1/2 tsp.Accent seasoning
  8. 1/2 tsp.5-spice powder
  9. 1/2 tsp.Garlic powder
  10. 1 T.Toasted sesame oil
  11. 1 T.Soy sauce

Cooking Instructions

30 minutes
  1. 1

Gather & prep your ingredients (chop veggies).

  2. 2

Mix all ingredients together well. I find using a gloved hand works best, smooshing everything so it's very well blended.

  3. 3

While filling, keep the unused wonton wrappers covered with a damp paper towel so they don't dry out. Dip your finger in water & moisten the edges of the wrapper. Place a small amount of the meat mixture in the center. (I use my small dough scoop filled HALF full.) For this traditional wonton fold, bring the top point to the bottom point and press firmly; then press down the sides, working from the filling toward the sides so you push out any air pockets.

  4. 4

With your index finger on top of the filling, bring the side points together, overlapping, and press together (as in photo). I made about 30 wontons, which used around half the meat mixture.

  5. 5

In a large skillet heat about 3/4 inch of oil to medium-high. Fry until done, about 4-5 minutes, flipping once or twice. I've cooked them in a deep fryer before, but find a skillet and shallow fry works better.

  6. 6

Drain on paper towels and serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce. Enjoy!

My 5 siblings and I were raised in the 1950s and 60s midwest by a major foodie dad who was a great cook. We all learned to cook at a young age. I love to cook for my 2 daughters, 7 grandkids, 8 great-grandkids, and extended family. My 4 year old great-grandson makes my day when he says "Nan sure is a good cooker!". :-). I'm trying to get all my favorite recipes saved here so my family and friends all have easy access to them even after I'm gone. My Cookpad collection is their inheritance, so I try to add my comments and memories to each recipe; that way they'll remember me with a smile when they use the recipes years from now. Recently I've called on my grandkids (all adults and avid cooks) to send me their own favorite recipes, with their prep photos, so we can collect everyone's favorites together in one place.
