It is typical south indian recipe. Cooked Rice, buttermilk kuzhambu and onion pakoda or vada prepared using chana dal is the best combination for lunch.
Steps

Soak chana dal for 1/2 an hour in water. If we have less time we can add fried gram(no need to soak) instead of soaking chana dal.

In a mixer, add garlic, shallots, green chilies, soaked chana dal or fried gram,ginger and shredded coconut.

Grind to a paste.

In a bowl add 2- 3 cups of buttermilk.

Add coconut paste and turmeric to buttermilk.

Switch off the stove when it starts to boil. Don't boil it. Otherwise it curdle.

Heat kadai. Add oil, red chili, fengruek, mustard and asafetida. Saute it.

Add this to buttermilk. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

We can also add chana dal vada or cooked white pumpkin or fried ladies finger to this buttermilk kuzhambu
