I have an old lady as a friend who uses burdock in place of the gobō, although they are biologically the same plant she tells me they are different in taste and texture.

the scientific name is Arctium lappa and applies to both, but it's like cabbage, mustard and other vegetables have the same scientific name but are so different in the case Brassica oleracea (european / common cabbage and other western greens) and Brasica rapa (bok choi and other asian greens).
