Can you use "wide egg noodles" instead of "shell noodles" ? You could layer the mixture and then the noodles or mix noodles together with potato and cheese ingredients would that work?

I don't see why not, I have also done this like lasagna and smeared the potato mix over the lasagna noodles and some onions and layered that way, too. It is equally delicious!
