And however long I kept it in the oven, it stayed really pale. Really gutted since I made enough batter for two :(

If your cake turned out to be dense, you most likely over-whipped the egg whites, or the batter altogether. The cake recipe itself isn't dense, so don't freak out; you most likely made a mistake whilst mixing the ingredients. The recipe is alright (could be better, texture-wise), but other than that it's a simple and easy recipe.
