I use pre-fried onions because frying onions takes so long and the entire house starts smelling like fried onions.

Yeah. When I use pre-fried onions, I don't use additional onions. If you don't want to use pre-fried onions, you can slice 1 small onion on 1/2 big onion and fry till golden brown.

If you don't want to use pre-fried onions, then slice 1 whole small onion (or half big onion) and fry til golden brown.
