Sweet potato is thought to originate from the Americas. Botanical and agricultural experts estimate the area of origin of sweet potato plants is New Zealand, Polynesia, and central America. Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov, a Soviet botanist, confirmed that the primary central region of the sweet potato plant was Central America. Sweet potatoes began to spread throughout the world, especially tropical countries in the 16th century. Spaniards spread sweet potatoes to the Asian region, especially the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
