We love chocolate cake in our home! It's always our go to flavor! Enjoyed baking this cake. It was a family project! This was my first attempt at sunflowers. Lots to learn!

Ingredients

  1. 2 1/4 cupsflour
  2. 1/2 cupcocoa powder
  3. 1 1/2 teaspoonsoda bicarbonate
  4. 1/4 teaspoonsalt
  5. 1/2 cupshortening
  6. 1 1/4 cupssugar
  7. 1 teaspoonvanilla essence
  8. 3eggs
  9. 1 1/3 cupcold water

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Turn oven to 180 degrees. Grease and lightly flour your pan of choice.

  2. 2

Stir together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. This is the dry mixture.

  3. 3

Beat shortening with an electric mixer. You can also do this by hand.

  4. 4

Add sugar and vanilla and beat till well combined. Be sure to scrape the sides of the mixing bowl as you continue.

  5. 5

Add eggs, one at a time. Beat after each addition till combined.

  6. 6

Add dry mixture and beat. Add water and beat. Do this till everything is incorporated.

  7. 7

Pour into prepared pan and bake for 35 - 40 minutes if using a cake pan. If making cupcakes 15 minutes. Well this is what happens when you use too much flour - I was distracted and added more than I intended. I cut the top off and it tastes good. I continued to decorate.
