Ketjap Knas – Indonesian-spiced venison

John A @JohnA
Very nice Laura. We do get muntjac deer in our garden but nowt bigger. Fortunately getting venison is very easy around here and it’s far more versatile than folk think.

How lovely to have them in your garden. I’ve seen them on walks in the Chiltern hills. Woburn is only 5 miles from my house and the public footpath meanders past Woburn Abbey (where afternoon tea was supposedly invented) and the Safari Park.I love venison especially since it’s cheaper and leaner than lamb or beef and more sustainable. Nowt. Do I detect a degree of ‘Northerness’ today from my friend in Essex?

I am a Geordie, albeit that I was “brought” south during the late king’s reign as my father sought work. My accent was knocked out of me! But my speech patterns and vocabulary still betray it to the alert. Although not in general much interested in sport I’m a lifelong Magpies supporter. I was also one of the early students at York and my wife is from the North so much of our time has been spent that way. We always intended to retire up north but fell in love with our Essex village decades ago and my only out of here will be involuntary and a box 🤣. On a clear day we can see the North Sea and in nearly 80 years the furthest I’ve ever lived from the North Sea is on the Middlesex/Buckinghamshire border. John

I love the sea, born in Southport, Lancashire and so a Sandgrounder but have spent the last couple of decades in Northampton and Milton Keynes and they are about as far as one can get from the sea! I did manage to break it up though with a couple of years living on the coast in Devon (Babbacombe) and Andalusia (Riviera del Sol).I initially moved away from the sea and to ‘the smoke’ back in 1984 and was told by my boss that people will think I’m thick with my accent so suggested I lose it. A decade working for a Danish company and living in Luxembourg mellowed it but my vowels are still flat and wine and visits home bring my accent back 😃.
