Cooking Instructions

Add drippings to large pot and place on medium high heat

Add flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into a large bowl.

Make a well in the middle of flour

Add warm water to center of flour

Using a butter knife mix ingredients together until combined. Do this very softly.

The key to beautiful rising fry bread is not to kneed the dough too much.

Once combined, turn out onto a lightly floured surface

Kneed dough very lightly, keeping light hands, knead for only 30 seconds

Leave for 15min to allow some resting and rising.

Cut diagonally using a dinner plate into palm size pieces in the shape of a rhombus (a plate helps to seal the edges)

Add 3 pieces at a time to the drippings, they will puff into pillows within one minute, flip over and leave for another minute.

remove from drippings and place onto paper towel.

Once all pieces are cooked, slice in half and serve with butter and golden syrup.

This recipe came about, do, to the fact, that 144 years ago the Navajo people living in Arizona, were forced on "The Long Walk", to New Mexico. There the beans and vegetables they were used to eating could not be grown at that time. So they were given army rations. So with the rations that they were given this recipe came about. Now I added the garlic, onion flakes and paprika but other then that, it's basically what they made. skunkmonkey101 -

This is a recipe for fried bread that is used to make Indian Tacos. This is a yeast version. I revised a recipe that my mother-in-law gave me into easy to make measurements.-The moisture of the dough may vary depending on the type of flour used and the humidity, so adjust accordingly.-The dough should be just a little bit softer than your earlobe.-I used the rapid rise type of yeast that can be used instantly after mixed with the flour.
