Ingredients

  1. as neededYukari (red shiso) powder,
  2. as neededNori (seaweed) powder,
  3. as neededCooked rice,
  4. Plastic wrap, rolling pin, or similar tool
  5. 1template for tracing the character image (store-bought or homemade from a clear file folder)

Steps

  1. 1

    Grind yukari and nori into a fine powder using a spice grinder or similar tool.

    You can also use a mortar and pestle for the yukari.

    Use the fine powder sifted through a tea strainer.

    Wrap the rice in plastic wrap and shape it into a ball. Roll a rolling pin over the top a few times to smooth the surface.

    Unwrap the rice, place the template on top, and gently press with the rolling pin a few times.

    Use a brush to apply the nori powder onto the rice through the template.

    Remove the template to reveal the design.

    For example, Mario is made with yukari powder, and Luigi is made with nori powder.

    Here is the process of making a Mario Brothers template from a clear file folder.

    Place a clear file folder over a printed image and trace the design.

    Connect the lines as needed and cut out the template.
