Steamed Jaggery Modaks

Modak is the favorite food of Lord Ganesha,the God of wisdom. It is made as an offering to the Lord during Ganpati festival. Its a sweet dumpling,can be steamed or deep fried. I make the steamed ones with whole wheat flour.

Modak is the favorite food of Lord Ganesha,the God of wisdom. It is made as an offering to the Lord during Ganpati festival. Its a sweet dumpling,can be steamed or deep fried. I make the steamed ones with whole wheat flour.
Steps

Grate the coconut,add jaggery and mix it well.

Heat it on a low flame in a thick bottomed pan,keep stirring continuously.

Once the jaggery melts completely,the mixture starts thickening.

Switch off the flame when the mixture forms a dry lump and add cardamom powder. Let it cool. Stuffing of modak is ready.

Take warm milk in a bowl and dissolve the saffron strands in it.

Add this milk to the whole wheat flour,mix it well. Add water and knead a thick dough. Apply oil to the dough after kneading.

Roll out small round shapes(pooris) from the dough,add the stuffing in centre. Close the poori from all sides and pinch it at the top.

Arrange these modaks on a sieve.

Fill a pot with water and get it to a rolling boil. Keep the sieve on this pot and cover it.

Let the modaks get steamed for about 15 minutes.

Take them out of the steam and now they are ready to be served!
