Peeling Chestnuts Using a Pressure Cooker

Chestnuts are delicious but they're really difficult to peel. After testing various methods, I came up with this way of using a pressure cooker.

By using a pressure cooker, the subsequent pressure drop after quickly raising the pressure causes the air to fill the space between the inner skin and the inner nut. This makes it easy to peel the outer shell by hand, and the inner skin can be pulled off smoothly with a knife. Recipe by Toshikoya

Ingredients

  1. 1 bagChestnuts

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Make a cut into the rough base of each chestnut with a knife.

  2. 2

Put the chestnuts in a pressure cooker and add enough water to cover.

  3. 3

Seal the lid of the pressure cooker and turn on the heat. Once the pressure valve rises, heat for 8 more minutes.

  4. 4

Open the lid after the pressure drops (if you're in a hurry to open the pot, cool it down with water first to release the pressure).

  5. 5

Push your fingers into the incision and peel off the outer shell.

  6. 6

Cut into the inner skin with a knife and peel.

  7. 7

The inner skins should come off smoothly.

  8. 8

    Voila!
