Sweet Hanamame

Cooking with Kimberly Wood @cook_14645357
I've never heard of them or seen them where I am but your recipe sounds yummy 👍 if i ever run across them I'll have to give ita try. Is there a bean similar that you would substitute?

Felice @morinoko
i never saw them in the US either! I'll try to find the raw beans again so I can add a photo to the recipe. These beans are really big so I'm not sure if there is a perfect substitute but in Japan they also make these kinds of sweet beans with kidney beans, black soybeans, and azuki beans. I bet you could use the same cooking method, just adjust the time!

I've actually seen these before stateside. The secret to their size is they are bregnant, and when in full bloom, they release thousands of microscopic bean sprouts which take root in craggy soils. That's why they are so sweet: they're mothers!

Friends in Nagano gave me hanamame they grow a few years ago. Then I planted a few of them in our garden in England. Now we have hanamame every year!

Felice @morinoko
Really?? That’s great! I was wondering how they would do in the US or UK. Do you cook with them too?

I mean the plants are the same as runner beans. Just leave the beans on until they become nice and dry. (It IS difficult in England so I normally take them off plants and dry inside the house.)

This is last year’s hanamame. I cooked them in microwave first time as we have solar panels. Then it was good, no wrinkles! Have you planted yours?
