Sourdough Starter Using Apple

Sally Strong @Sally
Hello! I would give it 3-4 tablespoons of flour. If your starter has a liquid on the surface then it might need some more

Should the jar I am using seal tightly or have just a loose cover? When I've made starters in the past, I've used a tall mason jar with the rubber seal removed, so hardly an airtight lid. Other recipes seem to call for an airtight lid. What do you suggest?

I suspect this might be something which is up to debate. I tend to seal my jar but then 'burp' it occasionally (every day to every other day). If my starter is taking some time to get bubbling I will remove the seal and leave the jar open to the air covered with a muslin cloth to introduce it to more natural yeasts in the air. I hope this helps!!

my sourdough starter will complete 4 years soon. I have been keeping it alive since 2021. life has been busy but eventually we have time for some sourdough bread or pizza. thanks !
