  2. 3/4ground beef
  3. 1/2of an onion, minced
  4. 2 clovesgarlic, minced
  5. 1 (28 oz)can crushed tomatoes
  6. 2 (6.5 oz)cans tomato sauce
  7. 2 (6 oz)cans tomato paste
  8. 1/2 cupwater
  9. 2 Tbswhite sugar
  10. 4 Tbsparsley (fresh or dried), divided
  11. 1 1/2 tspdried basil
  12. 1 1/2 tspsalt, divided (more to taste)
  13. 1 tspItalian seasoning
  14. 1/4 tsp(or more to taste) black pepper
  15. 12lasagna noodles (if using ready bake follow instructions on package)
  16. 16 ozricotta cheese (my store ran out so I used cottage cheese mixed with about 1 tsp of oregano or Italian seasoning)
  17. 1egg
  18. 3/4 poundmozzarella cheese, sliced
  19. 3/4 cupgrated Parmesan cheese
  20. Optional: I used 1/4 of a bell pepper I had
  21. Optional: 1-2 bay leaves

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, bell pepper (if using) and garlic in a Dutch oven over medium heat until well browned.

  2. 2

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Season with sugar, 2 tablespoon parsley, basil, 1 teaspoon salt, Italian seasoning, and pepper. Add bay leaves if using. Simmer, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  3. 3

If using noodles that need to be cooked, cook them according to the package. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese with egg, remaining 2 tablespoon parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

  4. 4

Preheat oven to 375. To assemble, spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange 6 noodles lengthwise over meat sauce. Spread with 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture. Top with 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese slices. Spoon 1 1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese.

  5. 5

Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Cover with foil: to prevent sticking, either spray foil with cooking spray or make sure the foil does not touch the cheese.

  6. 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes. Rest lasagna for about 15 minutes before serving.
