My Grandma used to make this at Christmas. It's different and I really enjoy it. I hope you will too.

In a large saucepan, simmer the sugar, cloves, cinnamon stick, anise, lemon zest, and water for 15 minutes.

If you prefer, you can strain the mixture at this point, but the spices will look pretty floating in the wine.

Add the wine, and heat it, but do not boil it.

Serve this drink warm in mugs.
