Boil water in a kettle.

While water boils, warm butter over medium heat in a medium saucepan.

Toast oats for 2-5 minutes in butter, stirring frequently.

Lower heat to medium-low and pour water slowly over oats. Careful, the water is going to splatter!

Simmer on low-medium uncovered for 25 minutes

Add milk and buttermilk, stir and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Optional: Stir in a tablespoon of brown sugar, 1/4 cup of raisins or a tablespoon of cinnamon.
