Steps
- 1
Prepare the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the yeast with 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, and a little of the warm water. Set aside in a warm place for at least 5 minutes.
- 2
In a separate large bowl, add the flour and make a well in the center.
- 3
Add the yeast mixture, butter, egg, vanilla, powdered milk, sugar, salt around the edge of the flour, and the rest of the water (or liquid milk if not using powdered milk) into the well.
- 4
Mix all the ingredients together until a smooth dough forms.
- 5
Sprinkle flour on a flat surface and turn out the dough.
- 6
Knead for at least 10 minutes.
- 7
The dough will be a bit sticky and very moist. Only add enough flour to clean the dough off your hands when you finish kneading.
- 8
Let the dough rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- 9
Divide the dough into 16 pieces and shape each into a round ball.
- 10
Prepare a rectangular baking dish and lightly grease it with oil before placing the dough balls inside.
- 11
Place the rolls in the dish and brush them with beaten egg. Let them rise for at least 30 minutes.
- 12
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
- 13
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your oven.
- 14
While the rolls are baking, make the syrup by mixing the water and sugar in a saucepan and cooking over low heat until it reaches a thin, thread-like consistency (not thick). When the rolls come out of the oven, brush them with syrup and sprinkle with sugar if desired.
