If you've ever lived in the Southern USA, you're totally familiar with the question, "Brown or white?" Meaning: What type of gravy do you want to dip your fries in? Or, have them smothered in? You're also always given the option of melted cheese, onions and chili.

This delicious US culinary dish is actually documented as pre-dating the US Civil War. However, Canada's Poutine was invented only in 1957 - with the one variation being the addition of cheese curds and, a really cool name meaning, "a mess." [admit it America. it does beat, "smothered fries" right?] Anyway, the end question remains. "Who really invented this dish?"

Whoever it was, cheers to Canada and the US on their delicious collaboration! My students had a blast not only making this crazy easy mess of a hot dish but, devouring it and learning of both histories!

Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 1LG Bag Thick Steak Fries [thin fries just don't hold up]
  2. as neededBrown Gravy
  3. as neededVelveeta Cheese
  4. to tasteSalt & Pepper
  5. 1LG Sheet Tinfoil

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

Since most hillbillies don't have lifting racks to crisp their fries - they'll simply crumple an oversized sheet of tinfoil and place fries gently on top to crisp.

  2. 2

Sprinkle fries with salt and pepper. Do not grease or coat tinfoil. Bake steak fries as per manufactures directions. Just make sure they're good and crispy! ;0)

  3. 3

Use either jarred brown gravy or packet form. Heat well. You'll want to make extra gravy for dipping!

  4. 4

Use Velveeta Cheese in any form. I like the mini blocks for freshness. Heat in microwave until smooth.

  5. 5

    Another good option.

  6. 6

Lightly drizzle gravy over the top of fries then melted cheese.

  7. 7

Serve with a side of piping hot brown gravy for dipping. Garnish with fresh or dried parsley. Enjoy your taste of the deep South! Now y'all come back. Ya hear?!
