Steps
- 1
Heat water. Once water is rock boiled, add rice flour and keep mixing.
Switch off the gas flame and cover the mixture and let it cool. - 2
For the stuffing, heat jaggery and coconut together along with a teaspoon of ghee on low flame.
Mix till jaggery melts completely and switch off the gas flame.
Add cardamom powder - 3
Knead the dough while it is still a little warm. Don't add any water.
- 4
Now make small lemon size balls and start with one dough ball at a time.
Flatten the ball using your thumb and index finger. Dip your fingers in water and ghee alternately while doing this step.
Make it flat especially the edges and then start pinching the edges to form petals.
Add 1 teaspoon of stuffing in the center and bring the petals to the center and close the petals to form modak shape.

- 6
Once you are done with all the modaks, cover them with a cloth or lid so that they don't dry out.
- 7
In an idli steamer, heat water and grease the steaming plate with few drops of ghee.
Alternately you can place a banana leaf on the plate and then place modaks(traditional way) - 8
Place the modaks on the plate and steam them for 10 minutes on high flame.
- 9
Switch off the gas and let them cool down completely before taking them out.
- 10
Serve with few drops of melted ghee on top.
