How to Easily Unwrap and Slice Bánh Chưng—Anyone Can Do It!
In this post, I want to share a super quick way to unwrap and slice bánh chưng without needing any knives or scissors. Many people may already know this trick, but I’m sure there are still plenty who don’t. So, while I was unwrapping this delicious bánh chưng, I took step-by-step photos to share with young cooks just starting out in the kitchen.
Steps
- 1
Peel off all the leaves from the bánh chưng. Use the bamboo ties that came with the cake to slice it. Split each tie in half so it’s not too wide—if it’s too wide, it can stick to the filling when cutting.
Make 4 ties:
- Place one lengthwise to cut the cake in half
- Place one crosswise to cut the cake into quarters
- Place two diagonally at 45-degree angles on each side to cut the cake into 6 and then 8 pieces - 2
Flip the bánh chưng over to the other side.
- 3
Remember the order in which you placed the ties earlier. Tighten the ties in the same order so the filling stays neatly inside and doesn’t get pulled out. Do this 4 times to cut the bánh chưng into 8 even, square pieces.

When you lift out a piece, the filling inside stays perfectly shaped and looks beautiful. Good luck!
