Masala Chaas (Spiced Buttemilk)

Indian Masala Chaas is the ideal summer drink! Made with yogurt, water and some spices, it’s not only light and refreshing but also good for you! Chaas is a dahi-based drink popular across the Indian subcontinent. In Rajasthani it is called ghol; and in Odia it’s called Ghol/Chaas; other names include moru in Tamil and Malayalam, taak in Marathi, majjiga in Telugu, majjige in Kannada, ale in Tulu and laban in Bengali. Masala chaas also called spiced buttermilk is a perfect way to beat the heat during the hot Indian summer. This is a variation to the basic chaas recipe and easy and quick to make.

First upon Mix yoghurt and water and whisk it to make buttermilk or Chhash. Make sure that you do not use sour curd.

Then Add coriander leaves, mint leaves, curry leaves, green chilli, ginger, garlic, roasted cumin powder, black salt and salt to a mixer jar. Add ice cubes to it and make a paste. Adding ice cubes help to retain the green colour.

Add the paste to buttermilk and leave it for sometime in the refrigerator. Strain butter milk after that. If you do not want to strain, then also it is fine.
