Preschool Bento (Sushi)

Today, instead of a character bento, I made a sushi bento. If you shape your child’s favorite foods to look like sushi toppings, you’ll have a fun kids’ sushi assortment.

I saw this idea in a bento book a while ago and always wanted to try it. Today, I made it my own way without looking at anything. I didn’t have any character bento ingredients, so I improvised.

Steps
- 1
Use a small oval mold to shape the rice into even pieces, as shown above. You can also shape them by hand. I made 7 pieces from 1 small bowl of rice.
- 2
Use plastic wrap to help shape the rice neatly.
- 3
Cut nori (seaweed) into strips. Place your favorite toppings on the rice and secure with a strip of nori.
- 4
For more variety, add gunkan-maki or thin sushi rolls. Pack everything into a bento box and it’s ready!
- 5
My son loved this sushi bento so much that I made it three times in a row. This photo is from the third time.
