I first had this as part of a set menu at an izakaya (Japanese pub) and loved it, so I adapted it to make it easy to prepare at home.

Add all the marinade ingredients to a plastic bag.

Add the beef to the bag and gently massage to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes (since the beef is thin), or overnight for a stronger flavor.

Roll the beef into bite-sized pieces and thread 3 pieces onto each skewer. For lunchboxes, use toothpicks instead of skewers.

Grill the skewers in a fish grill or broiler. Grill on low for 7-8 minutes, or use the automatic setting for marinated foods if available. Watch carefully as they cook.

To prevent the skewers from burning, wrap the ends in aluminum foil. After grilling, remove the foil carefully to avoid burns. These skewers are also perfect for entertaining.
