Cherry season has started and the farms are open. You can pick, eat, and buy cherries right from the farm—it's so much fun! They're so affordable that I bought a lot to make all kinds of cherry treats: dried cherries, cherry liqueur, cherry syrup, and more.

Wash the cherries thoroughly, remove the stems, and let them dry. In a clean glass jar, start by sprinkling a little sugar on the bottom, then add a layer of cherries. Alternate layers of sugar and cherries until all the cherries are used, finishing with a layer of sugar. Seal the jar tightly and let it sit for one week until the cherries soften, then open and stir gently.

Let the cherries soak for a few weeks until they are fully infused with sugar. There are two ways to enjoy these preserved cherries: When the cherries are soft, serve them over ice with a splash of liquor for a delicious cocktail. For cherry syrup, pour some syrup and a few cherries into a glass, squeeze in a little lemon juice, and add crushed ice. This makes a great summer refreshment.
