Ingredients

  • 1 tbspOnion powder
  • 3 cups(divided) Crushed or puréed tomato sauce
  • 1 can (400 g)Diced tomatoes (with juices)
  • 3 tbspTomato paste
  • 0.5 cup(or 1.5 cups cooked rice) Uncooked white rice
  • 1 lb (450 g)Ground beef, pork, or a combination
  • 3 tbsp(optional) Fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 pinchGround black pepper
  • 1 tbsp(optional) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 headGreen or savoy cabbage
  • 1 tbspPaprika
  • 1.5 tspKosher salt
  • 3Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1(optional) Celery stalk (finely chopped)
  • 3(optional; or use parsnips or a mix) Carrots (medium, shredded)
  • 1Onion (medium, finely chopped)
  • 3 tbspOlive oil

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

  2. 2

    Boil water in a large pot. Core cabbage and blanch whole head, peeling off softened leaves (12–16).

    Cook rice and set aside.

  4. 4

    Heat olive oil in a pan. Sauté onion, carrots, and celery for 5–7 min.

    Add garlic, cook 1 min. Add ground meat, cook until browned. Drain fat.

    Stir in salt, pepper, parsley, cooked rice, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and 1/3 cup tomato sauce.

    Spread thin layer of tomato sauce in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

    Trim thick stem from cabbage leaves. Place 1/4–1/3 cup filling in each, roll up tightly.

    Arrange rolls seam-side down in dish. Pour remaining tomato sauce over.

    Cover with foil. Bake 60–75 min until tender. Rest 10–15 min before serving.

Tips

A mix of beef and pork gives better richness than using one alone. If sauce is too thick, add a small amount of water before baking. If too watery, add a little tomato paste.

Mmmm my lil grandma used to make stuffed cabbage all the time which was one of my favorite meals she made for me ❤️ looks soooo yummy 😋
