In a bowl, mix the yogurt with the sugar, then add the baking soda dissolved in 1 cup of water.

Gradually add the semolina, stirring well to avoid lumps, until the mixture is smooth.

Generously butter a 14-inch (35 cm) round baking pan and bake the Samali in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 30-40 minutes, until golden brown.

When the cake is done, cut it into pieces with a knife while still in the pan.

For the syrup: In a saucepan, combine the water, sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Boil for 10-15 minutes. Pour the hot syrup over the warm cake. Serve with ice cream if desired.
