Steps

Cut bottom off onion and stand flat on a cutting board and halve
2

Peel off outer skin leaving top intact
3

Slice to desired thickness from almost to the top through the bottom
4

Starting from the bottom slice across the onion to near the top
5

There ya go. Toss the top into the compost bin
