Steps

  1. 1

Before trying this recipe, please take note: I "eyeball" about 3/4 of this recipe. I use a variety of apples, as the changing of flavors creates a dance party in your face...also, I'll get to the crust later.

  2. 2

Peel, core, and cut apples. I do varying thickness. nothing bigger than the width of my thumb

  3. 3

Put peeled, cut apples in a large bowl (big enough you can stir them in)

  4. 4

Add sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and the 2 tablespoons flour to the bowl of apples

  5. 5

Stir em up (I go from edge to middle to not crush them. I also use a wood spoon )

  6. 6

Let them sit while you make the crust (feel free to buy, I always make mine)

  7. 7

    Okay, here's where I eyeball it. I say 2 cups flour, I mean a relative 2 cups... it's more like 3?

  8. 8

Put flour in a new bowl

  9. 9

Take your vegetable shortening and flop it into the flour.

  10. 10

Using a fork, press the shortening into the flour until you evenly distribute it

  11. 11

The way you know you have a good crust base will take practice. The flour shortening mix will feel crumbly and soft but hold together when squeezed in hand.

  12. 12

Add your water, mix slowly and don't add all at once.

  13. 13

The end product will be the consistency of playdough, easily rolled with no issues of flaking or breaking.

  14. 14

Separate dough into two balls and roll one out using a floured rolling pin and a cutting board (or counter top)

  15. 15

    Roll till about 1/8in thick

  16. 16

Put In pie pan, fill with apples, roll out other dough and pinch edges closed.

  17. 17

Knife the pie (put holes in top crust.

  18. 18

Melt butter and add sugar and baste top of pie

  19. 19

Bake @ 425 for 15 mins then 350 for about an hour or till crust is golden brown

  20. 20

Let cool so it ain't molten lava, then eat!
