Dad makes his homemade vanilla ice cream every 4th of July. I remember when dad would hand crank the ice cream; and we would sit outside and talk. It's been a family tradition for many years. We have tweaked the recipe over the years and recently changed the sugar to Truvia; which makes it less sugar and calories. Dad makes the best homemade ice cream.

Ingredients

20 servings
  1. 2 cansweetened condensed milk
  2. 1/2 cupTruvia (sugar substitute)
  3. 1/4 tspmorton salt (low sodium)
  4. 2 tbspvanilla extract
  5. 1/2 pintswhipping cream
  6. 1 1/2 quartskim milk

Cooking Instructions

40 mins
  1. 1

    Combine cream; sugar; salt; and vanilla extract in bowl and mix with mixer.

    Pour into ice cream can (electric or hand crank maker should be filled with ice and rock salt; and the can should be in the middle)

  3. 3

    Add skim milk to the liner of the can. Put lid on and crank for 30 to 40 minutes. It should become a creamy consistency.
