Steps
- 1
peel, core and slice enough apples to fill your crockpot within a half inch of the top.

the apples will cook down a good bit.
- 3
place the apple slices in s bowl.

tutn crockpot on high and add cider (or water), butter and about 1/5 of the apple slices in an even layer.

sprinkle about 1/2 cup sugar (or more) over apples and dust with cinnamon and nutmeg.

in a mixing bowl place flour, baking powder and salt.

stir dry ingredients to mix.

add the shortening several spoonfuls. cut shortening into flour with a pastry knife until pea sized pieces.

add the milk all at once and stir with a fork just until all ingredients are moistened. do not over mix.

use about 1/5of the dough and roll out on a floured surface with a Rolling pin until it is about 1/16 inch thick.

keep lifting the dough and adding flour to keep from sticking.

use a pizza cutter or knife to cut dough into 1 inch strips. don't worry about neatness.

place a layer of the dough over the apples covering the entire surface. add second layer over first at right angles.

keep adding layers of apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and double layers of dough until all the apples are gone and top with last double layer of dough.

if the layers are not even don't worry.

dust top layer of dough with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. cover crockpot and cook on high for about 3 hours.
