Hot Chocolate

This is one of many recipes that I have from my cooking class junior year of high school. The recipes from this class have some unnecessary directions since the class was only one hour and these recipes had longer prep, so we had to work around the time we had to cook. We also had limited resources, so a lot of makeshift cooking happened. I am not smart enough to adjust the directions for a normal setting, so the weird directions will stick. Sorry.

Steps

  1. 1

In a medium saucepan, heat 2 cups of water. This will function as the botton half of a double-broiler.

  2. 2

Select a bowl to sit atop the saucepan for the top half of the double boiler. The water level of the saucepan should be just below the bottom of the bowl. Adjust the water level.

  3. 3

Add chopped chocolate to the double boiler and heat until melted (alternatively, you could use chocolate chips).

  4. 4

In a separate saucepan heat the milk and half-and-half over medium heat to just below the simmering point. Do not allow the milk to come to a boil.

  5. 5

Remove the milk from the heat and stir in the melted chocolate.

  6. 6

When mixture is smooth, add sugar and vanilla extract. Whisk vigorously.

  7. 7

Reheat gently and serce immediately. It will harden pretty quick.

  8. 8

    Garnish with marshmallows if desired.

I always had a love for all varieties of food, which is backed up by my family. Get-togethers have always had a strong culinary presence. At any time of the day, the dining table and kitchen counters would be littered with snacks while we eagerly awaited a hearty homestyle dinner. Food is such an important and vital part of who I am and I wish to share my love of it as well as the pride I have for my family.
