Ingredients

4 servings
  1. 2 cupsrice
  2. 1 cupmoong dal
  3. to tasteSalt
  4. For masala powder
  5. 1/4 cupdry coconut
  6. 1 tbspcumin seeds
  7. 1 tbspcoriander seeds
  8. 1clove
  9. 1-2 tspblack pepper
  10. 1 tspturmeric powder
  11. 1/2 tsphing
  12. For the sweet and tangy rasam
  13. 1 tspOil
  14. 1 tspmustard seeds
  15. 1 tspturmeric powder
  16. Pinchhing
  17. 1Red chilli dry
  18. Curry leaves 5-6
  19. 1lemon size tamrind
  20. Same amount of jaggery
  21. Salt
  22. 1 tspRed chilli powder

Cooking Instructions

    Wash the rice and dal thoroughly and keep aside..

  2. 2

    Put all the ingredients under masala into a mixer jar and make a coarse powder

  3. 3

    Now add the rice and dal to a pan add 6 cups of water, salt and the masala powder and cook for about 5 mins till it starts to boil then keep the flame to medium and till rice and dal is cooked well..

    Serve hot with ghee and rasam.. Will also taste good with pickle and papad

    For making Rasam. First soak the tamrind in water for 5-10 mins.. In a pan heat oil and make tempering by adding mustard, turmeric, hing, curry leaves and red chilli..

    Once the mustard seeds splutter add the tamrind pulp, water, jaggery, salt, red chilli powder and boil for few mins..
