Ingredients

  • 1zest and juice from 2 large navel oranges
  • 1zest and juice from 1 lemon
  • 3 lbsweet red apples (about 8)
  • 3 lbripe Bosc pears (about 7)
  • 1/2 cuplight brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 2 tbspbutter
  • 1 tspground cinnamon

Steps

    Preheat the oven to 350° F.

  2. 2

    Place the zest and the juice from the oranges and lemon in a nonreactive Dutch oven.

  3. 3

    Peel, quarter, and core the apples and pears and toss them in the juice.

  4. 4

    Add the brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon and cover the pot.

  5. 5

    Bake for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours, until the apples and pears are tender.

  6. 6

    Mix with a whisk until the applesauce is smooth, but still a little chunky.

  7. 7

    Depending on how ripe the fruit is, the apples will likely fall apart and the pears will break up but stay chunky.

  8. 8

    Serve warm or at room temperature.

  9. 9

    *This recipe makes about 2 quarts.*

  10. 10

    **This works excellent as a side dish to poultry, or served warm for dessert with vanilla ice cream or drizzled with half and half.**

Some of my favorite things are family, friends, my pets, cooking, baking, football (Badger & Packer), Brewer baseball, college basketball, car racing, thrift stores, volunteering, and rummage sales. I have a 9 year old rescue dog, and 7 birds ( 6 are rescue) and they range in age from 1 year to over 19 years old. I volunteer for a dog rescue and a shelter, as well as other festivals and organizations.
