Baklava
An old traditional recipe that we make in all homes on New Year's Eve, not only for our family to enjoy but also to bring as a gift to in-laws, godparents, and friends, as is the custom.
Steps
- 1
In a bowl, mix the almonds or walnuts, cinnamon, and cloves.
- 2
Butter a small baking pan, layer 3-4 sheets of phyllo dough, buttered, and sprinkle with the filling mixture. Cover with 1 sheet, butter it, and sprinkle with the filling mixture. Reserve 4 sheets of phyllo and repeat the process until all the sheets and filling are used. Finally, cover with the reserved sheets, buttering each one.
- 3
With a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond-shaped pieces. Place 1 whole clove or almond in the center of each piece. Drizzle the surface with melted butter. Bake the baklava in a slow oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes until well browned.
- 4
Meanwhile, prepare the syrup by boiling all the ingredients together for 5-6 minutes. Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Let it cool and then cut the pieces again all the way through to separate them completely. Enjoy and happy holidays.
