This is a very famous and simple recipe from Odisha. It is healthy and comforting ,as it cools your body from within on a hot summer day.Went through many videos and I found this very similar to the southern curd rice in a watery style.This is prepared even in Bengal and Kerala with small variations.

Ingredients

4 servings
  • 2 cupscooked rice (I used boiled rice here)
  • 1medium sized Onion thinly sliced
  • 1green chilli crushed in a motar and pestle
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 pinchAsafoetida/Hing
  • 1 sprigcurry leaves
  • Few mint leaves (I used coriander leaves)
  • to tasteSalt
  • 1 tsp mustard oil
  • 2dry red chillies (adjust to taste)
  • 1 big cup water
  • 1 cupcurd
  • 1/2lemon(adjust to taste)

Steps

  1. 1

    Firstly take the cooked rice and mash it well. When you cook rice in an open vessel and later when it is cooked we strain it, that starch water can be used. And usually, the rice should be soaked in this starch water overnight. It should ferment in it. It cools down the body heat,it had like this.

    Here I didn't do it, so followed the step as shown in some videos. This is the picture of the mashed cooked rice.

    Then keep the ingredients ready. Here I have sliced onions thinly and kept it aside.

    The other ingredients used.

    Now heat a non stick kadhai. Put mustard oil and let it get heated.

    Then add the mustard seeds.After it splutters add in the asafoetida powder/ hing,dry red chilli broken into pieces & curry leaves.

    Fry for a minute.Then later turn off the gas.

    Now add the sliced onions, crushed green chilli and salt in the rice.

    Then pour in the tadka.

    Pour in the water and curd, mix well.

    Put salt and squeeze in the lemon juice.Then garnish with chopped coriander leaves or mint leaves.Mix again.

    Serve immediately.Enjoy Dahi Pakhala.
