Boil the chana dal in pressure cooker for about 4 to 5 whistles. Remove the water and keep aside.

In a pan add oil, heat it. Once heated add ginger garlic paste and saute for about a minute. Add onions and cook till translucent. Add tomatoes.

Once the tomatoes are soft add the spices. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes.

Add water and bring to boil. Also add the dal and mix well.

For tempering: Take asafoetida, red chilli powder, curry leaves, cumin seeds, dry red chilli, chopped garlic.

Heat oil and add the above mentioned ingredients one by one. Once tempered pour it over the cooked dal.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and a slice of lemon. Dal fry tadka is ready to serve.
