Baklava with Walnuts and Honey

Delicious, crispy, and wholesome baklava from Crete, made with the best the island has to offer: top-quality extra virgin olive oil and pure honey. Baklava is a traditional Greek dessert that's easy to make and loved by many. We use walnuts, which are plentiful in Greece, layers of phyllo dough brushed with olive oil or butter, and a syrup flavored with cinnamon—or sometimes we use honey instead of syrup. This sweet treat is a staple in Greek homes for every celebration.

Steps

  1. 1

In a bowl, mix the walnuts with the sugar, cinnamon, and ground cloves.

  2. 2

In a baking pan, lay down 2 sheets of phyllo dough as the base and sprinkle with the walnut mixture. Add another sheet, sprinkle again with the walnut mixture, then another sheet, and so on. Cover with 2 more sheets and cut the baklava into pieces. Place a whole clove in each piece.

  3. 3

Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan until hot but not boiling. Pour the oil evenly over the baklava so it covers everything (this makes it crispy).

  4. 4

Place the pan in a preheated oven with convection and bake for about 45 minutes at 340°F (170°C).

  5. 5

Once baked, pour the hot honey over the baklava and let it soak for about 1 hour.
