Steps
- 1
Heat the water until warm, then pour it into a cup and add salt to taste.
- 2
In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder, shortening, and sugar. Set aside about half a cup of flour in a separate container for later.
- 3
With clean hands, mix the flour, baking powder, and sugar together. Make a small well in the center of the flour and gradually add a little more than half of the cup of salted warm water.
- 4
Start kneading the dough until it is smooth and free of lumps. Cover the dough well and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
- 5
On a clean board or table, sprinkle some of the reserved flour. Shape the dough into a ball, place it on the floured surface, and flatten it on both sides with your fingers.
- 6
You can use a rolling pin, but a clean bottle works well too. Roll out the dough into tortillas using either tool.
- 7
Once shaped, cook the tortilla on a preheated griddle (comal) over medium-high heat. Flip when well cooked on one side.
- 8
Don’t worry if your flour tortillas aren’t perfectly round—the important thing is the flavor.
