Ingredients

  • 1lemon sized ball of tamarind
  • 2 tbspoil
  • 1/2 tspblack mustard seeds
  • 1 tspchana dal
  • 1 tbspraw unsalted peanuts
  • 1/2 cupfinely chopped onions (optional)
  • 1/2 cupfinely chopped onions (optional)
  • 4 cupscooked rice
  • to tasteSalt

  1. 1

    Soak the tamarind in 3/4 cup warm water for 10 minutes,Extract juice of tamarind with fingers and discard any seeds and pulp that remains.

  2. 2

    Heat the oil in a wide pan and add the mustard seeds, chana dal, and peanuts

  3. 3

    Let the mustard seeds pop and the peanuts and dal roast to a light golden brown. Then add the curry leaves, red chillies, hing, and onions

  4. 4

    Let these ingredients roast for 2-3 minutes or until the onions are cooked

  5. 5

    Add the tamarind extract and bring to boil

  6. 6

    Add salt and let the mixture boil until it thickens a bit

  7. 7

    Add cooked rice and mix well. Adjust salt if needed.
