One of my favourite breakfast!
As kids we used to enjoy it when mom and grandmom used to cook it, especially on Sundays and even now
The crackling of Cinnamon stick along with other whole spices, added first in hot oil gives a nice flavour to the Chana Dal apart from the Garam Masala powder used.

Even if there is no Lauki/ Bottlegourd I would do without it but I make sure to add some fresh Coconut to the Chana Dal preparation.
This is my version!

Ingredients

approx. 1 hr
4-5 servings
  • 1/2 cupDried Chana Dal soaked for few hours
  • 3/4 cupBottle Gourd/ Louki/ Louka/ Lau cut into small bits
  • As neededSmall pc of Fresh coconut sliced & cut into small bits
  • 1/2 tbspGinger paste
  • 2Fresh Green chillies or as per taste slitted
  • 2-3 tbspsMustard oil
  • 1/2 TspCumin powder
  • 1/4 tspTurmeric powder
  • as per taste Salt
  • 1/4 tspGaram Masala powder
  • 1 pinchsugar
  • 1 tbspGhee
  • Whole spices (04 nos.)
  • 1Small cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 tspCumin seeds
  • 1Whole dry Red Chilli
  • 1Bay leaf
  • For Garnishing (optional)
  • leavesas required Coriander/ cilantro chopped

    Prepare all ingredients as mentioned above.

    Heat mustard oil in a kadai, fry the coconut bits/ pieces first (I just kept 4-5 pieces in long slices for garnishing, it's optional). Keep aside.

    In the same oil add the whole spices, let it crackle, then add in the soaked Chana Dal and mix. Add in the Bottle Gourd and the chilli also and mix it well.

    Add in the Salt, Turmeric and Cummin powder,add Little water too and give it a mix and bhunno for few minutes but be careful do not dry it and burn. Then add water and cook for almost 40-45 minutes or until the Dal and bottle gourd/ Louki has become soft and mushy (I initially added three cups of water and then after 15-20 minutes again I added 3 cups).

    Smash the Dal with the help of your ladle gently but we don't want a paste and check the consistency, it should not be runny but a little thick consistency. Add Garam masala and ghee give it a quick mix cover it. Put off the flame and let it rest for about 5-10 minutes. Serve hot with Puri / Luchi or Parathas.
