First, soak the tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes.

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a pan. Add 1 tablespoon cumin seeds, 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida, red chili powder to taste, and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder. Then add the tamarind pulp. Once the tamarind pulp is cooked, add 1 bowl (about 1 cup, 180 grams) of jaggery.

When the jaggery melts, add 1/2 teaspoon black salt and cook for 10 minutes.
