Ingredients

  1. 1 packagephyllo dough
  2. 30whole cloves
  3. 3.5 oz (100 grams)plain dry breadcrumbs
  4. 1 lb (2 oz)(500 grams) finely chopped almonds
  5. 1 teaspoonground cinnamon
  6. 1/2 teaspoonground cloves
  7. 1 lb (10 oz)(750 grams) unsalted butter, melted
  8. For the syrup
  9. 2 lb (3 oz)(1 kilogram) sugar
  10. 2 1/2 cups (600 grams)water
  11. 1lemon, cut in half
  12. 1cinnamon stick
  13. 3 tablespoonshoney

    Generously butter a medium-sized baking pan.

  2. 2

    Cut the phyllo sheets in half to fit the pan, if needed.

  3. 3

    Layer four sheets of phyllo in the pan, brushing each one well with melted butter.

  4. 4

    In a bowl, mix together the almonds, cinnamon, breadcrumbs, and ground cloves.

  5. 5

    Spoon a little of the almond mixture over the buttered phyllo sheets.

  6. 6

    Add 2 more buttered phyllo sheets, then spread more of the almond mixture on top.

  7. 7

    Continue layering 2 buttered phyllo sheets and some of the almond mixture, making sure to butter each sheet well.

    Once all the filling is used, layer 4 more buttered phyllo sheets on top. Cut the baklava into squares or diamonds as you prefer.

    Place a whole clove in the center of each piece to keep the phyllo from lifting.

    Pour any remaining melted butter evenly over the baklava.

    Bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) with the fan on, placing the pan on the middle rack, for 1 1/2 hours.

    About 15 minutes before the baklava is done, combine all the syrup ingredients in a saucepan and boil for about 3 minutes.

    Remove the baklava from the oven and, while it's still hot, pour the hot syrup over it using a ladle.

    Let it cool completely before serving. Enjoy your delicious, fragrant homemade baklava!
