French fries, chips, finger potato,French fried potatoes or simply fries are batonnet or allumette cut deep fried potatoes. Disputed origin from Belgium or France. They are prepared by cutting potatoes into even strips drying them & frying them usually in deep fryer.
During those days in winter when river froze fish is deprived so villagers fry potato instead. It is said that this dish was discovered by American soldiers in Belgium during World War I and since the dominant language of southern Belgium is French they dubbed the tasty potatoes “French” fries.
