Stovetop Kunafa with Chocolate

This delicious kunafa takes less than 15 minutes to make. My mom used to make it for us, serving it hot with warm milk to eat with a spoon. I added chocolate in the middle for my kids because they like it without milk.
Stovetop Kunafa with Chocolate
This delicious kunafa takes less than 15 minutes to make. My mom used to make it for us, serving it hot with warm milk to eat with a spoon. I added chocolate in the middle for my kids because they like it without milk.
Steps
- 1
Freeze the kunafa dough ahead of time, then break it up by hand.
- 2
In a small skillet, add 1 1/2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons sugar. Cook over low heat, stirring to make a caramel. If you want it sweeter, add more sugar, but remember the chocolate will add sweetness. Keep stirring the sugar and butter until it forms a golden mixture. Divide the kunafa dough in half. Place the first half over the caramel in the skillet on low heat.
- 3
Use your hand to gently press and move the kunafa in a circular motion for about 2 minutes. Turn off the heat. Layer the chocolate pieces evenly over the kunafa in the skillet. Add the second half of the kunafa dough on top of the chocolate. Cover with a wide plate or pot lid, then carefully flip the kunafa so the caramelized side is on top.
- 4
In another skillet, repeat the process: add sugar and butter over low heat until golden, then add 1 tablespoon water and stir. Transfer the kunafa from the plate to the new skillet so the other side can brown and the chocolate melts in the middle. Keep cooking on low heat, gently rotating the skillet in a circular motion to form an even disk. Enjoy!
