Tanghulu or Tang Hulu or Bingtang Hulu is a traditional Chinese snack consisting of several Sugar coated Fruits of Chinese Hawthorn on bamboo skewers. Basically it's a Fruit skewer coated in a clear hardened Sugar syrup. However it was originally made using Hawthorn Berries. It is said to have originated in China and later on was brought to Korea by the Chinese immigrants.
It has become a popular streetfood in China and is loved by many Fruit lovers across the Globe.

The usage of White Sugar to give the Fruits on the skewers a glossy look is not so dangerous in terms of health as each skewer is reported to contain 20 to 30 gms of Sugar which is on par with the recommended daily dose. So rest assured. Sit back, relax and enjoy these yummy beauties with your favourite Fruits that you can lay your hands upon.
This one here is made by me using juicy Red Watermelon for a great treat. Summers can't better than this. You would love this crunchy delight for sure. It's a bit tricky but it's worth all the efforts. My first try also was a super flop but i made it my way through the second attempt. The Sugar syrup must be right. Do not stir. Let's get on with the recipe straight away folks.

Enjoy Cooking with Zeen!

Steps

15 minutes
  1. 1

Wash the watermelon thoroughly and pat dry. Cut it as desired. I love round scoops of it.

  2. 2

Skewer these into long barbeque sticks with 3 or 4 more of these mini scooped watermelon roundels or even a toothpick for a single use if desired.

  3. 3

In the meantime, bring water and sugar to a rolling boil on a high heat at first and then lower it to a medium high until it reduces to a string consistency. To check whether it's done, drop a little of the syrup in water. If it forms brittle thread like structures, it's ready. Do not stir.

  4. 4

In the meantime, keep the glass of chilled water with ice-cubes ready. Dip the skewers in the syrup and see to it that they are fully and nicely covered with the syrup. Dip these immediately in the chilled water as seen. That's it.

  5. 5

Crunchy and delicious Chinese candied fruit is ready to be devoured. Relish them right away. Enjoy!

Homemaker by choice and a passionate cook by heart. An aspiring cook who actually never knew anything about Cooking until i became a mother myself. With Motherhood came the responsibilities as well and this was the turning point in my life.I started to learn the ABC's of cooking, taking help from my mother and my MIL. And time just flew. I spread my wings higher and higher. With my love for excellence and innovation, i stepped into a world of homecooks with my exposure to Cookpad one fine day on the social media. And there was no looking back since then and i have not only shared recipes here on this wonderful platform but also have made some lovely friends as well. Today iam successful because of my hard work, dedication and loads of good wishes of my family and my kids in particular.
