Ingredients

10 mins
  • 1 cupmillet Barnyard (Kudiraivali)
  • 2.5 cupswater
  • 1Onion finely chopped
  • 1Carrot finely chopped
  • 3 - 4beans finely chopped
  • 1 tbspgreen peas fresh/frozen
  • 1/2 tspmustard
  • 1/4 tspurad dal
  • 1/4 tspbengal gram dal
  • 1 inchginger grated
  • 1/2green chilli
  • 7 - 8curry leaves
  • 1/4 tspturmeric powder (Optional)
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tbspOil (preferably groundnut oil or sesame oil)

Steps

    Wash the millet 2-3 times in water and soak in fresh water for atleast 10 minutes

  2. 2

    Heat a broad pan, heat oil

  3. 3

    Add mustard seeds and wait till it splutters

  4. 4

    Add urad dal, bengal gram dal, curry leaves, grated ginger and green chilli. Saute till the dals turn light brown

  5. 5

    Add onions and fry till onions turn light pink

  6. 6

    Add carrots, beans and peas. Mix well. Keep the flame in sim. Cover and cook for 3-4 minutes

  7. 7

    Once the vegetables have softened a bit, add turmeric powder and mix well

  8. 8

    Add 2.5 cups of water and let it boil

  9. 9

    Once it starts to boil, add the required salt and the soaked/drained millet.

  10. 10

    Mix well and let it boil vigorously

  11. 11

    Reduce the flame to sim. Cover and cook for 5 minutes

  12. 12

    Switch off and let the pan remain untouched for another 5 minutes

  13. 13

    Mix well and serve hot with any chutney/sambhar of your choice
