Peel and core the pears, then cut them in half.

Place the ingredients for the syrup in a saucepan. Once it comes to a boil, add the pears. Simmer until the pears are tender, about 7-8 minutes.

Remove the pears from the syrup and arrange them in a small baking dish. Set the syrup aside.

In a bowl, beat the cake ingredients together. Start with the eggs and sugar, then add the melted butter, and finally the dry ingredients.

Spread the batter over the pears carefully, as it will be a bit thick. Bake in a preheated oven at 430°F (220°C) for about 20 minutes.

Slice and enjoy warm or cold, with the compote syrup or on its own.
