preheat oven to 350°F

melt chocolate in boiling water

cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy

add egg yolks 1 at a time. beat well after each addition

add chocolate mixture and vanilla

in a seperate bowl sift togeather flour, salt, and baking soda

add flour mixture alternatly with the butttermilk until the batter is smooth

in a seperate bowl beat egg whites until stiff peaks form

fold egg whites into batter gently

pour batter into three greased and wax paper lined 8 or 9 inch circle cake pans

bake for 30 to 40 minutes

cool 10 minutes in pan then invert to wire racks to cool completley
